PlayTime Eliminated from Dota 2 EWC After DarkMago and Vintage Face ESIC Probe

South American Dota 2 organisation PlayTime has been eliminated from the Esports World Cup 2026 after two of its key members were provisionally suspended by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) amid an ongoing anti-corruption investigation — a sudden and dramatic fall for a team that had only recently cemented itself as a legitimate contender on the global stage.

The Suspensions and What ESIC Said

ESIC announced the provisional suspensions of mid laner Oswaldo "DarkMago" Herrera and sporting director/coach Juan "Vintage" Angulo on July 14, hours after their Survival Stage match against Chinese team Vici Gaming was postponed by tournament organisers citing an unspecified "integrity issue." The suspensions took effect immediately.

In its official statement, ESIC said the measures were imposed following a preliminary assessment of information relating to suspected breaches of its Anti-Corruption Code and Player Code of Conduct. The commission was explicit that these are precautionary steps — not a finding of guilt.

"The measures are protective and precautionary. They are intended to safeguard the integrity of the competition, preserve relevant evidence and support the fair and effective conduct of ESIC's investigation." — ESIC

Both DarkMago and Vintage were interviewed by ESIC representatives as part of standard investigative procedure and were given the opportunity to respond. The commission has stated it will not disclose further details until there is meaningful progress in the investigation or new measures are taken.

Vintage Faces the Widest Restrictions

While both players are barred from EWC 2026 and all ESIC member competitions for the duration of the investigation, Vintage's suspension carries additional scope. As sporting director, his interim ban explicitly prohibits him from undertaking any coaching, management, strategic, or team-facing support functions in connection with participating teams or players — effectively cutting him off from any involvement in the event entirely.

DarkMago, 27, is one of the most decorated mid lane players to emerge from South America. He was part of the Thunder Awaken roster that achieved what was, at the time, the best EWC finish for an SA team — a top-6 placement at The International 2022. Vintage, 30, joined him as part of the former paiN Gaming roster, a squad that was signed by PlayTime in May 2026 following a short-lived and disappointing earlier roster experiment.

PlayTime's Rise — and Sudden Elimination

The timing is particularly striking given how rapidly PlayTime had ascended. The organisation entered the Dota 2 competitive circuit in January 2026 as part of a Philippines-based online gaming platform's effort to build an esports presence. Its initial Southeast Asian roster — which included recognisable names like Gabbi and Armel — was released in March after an underwhelming run. The pivot to the ex-paiN lineup paid immediate dividends: the team secured a top-6 finish at DreamLeague Season 29, accumulated enough circuit points to qualify directly for Dota 2 EWC, and then navigated through the Group Stage to reach the Survival Stage.

With both DarkMago and Vintage barred from participating, PlayTime forfeited their best-of-three Survival Stage match against Vici Gaming. The Chinese team advanced without playing and will now face 1w Team in the next round. PlayTime's EWC campaign is over.

What Remains Unknown

ESIC has not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the alleged violations, and neither the commission nor the EWC Foundation has linked the investigation to any particular match, result, or incident. Speculation within the Dota 2 community has centred on potential match-fixing given the timing — the match postponement, the abrupt nature of the suspensions, and the involvement of an anti-corruption body — but those rumours remain entirely unverified.

It is worth noting that the EWC match initially postponed on July 14 had also been the subject of an earlier, separate rumour: that a Doom hero bug involving Granite Golem and Power Threads had created an exploitable infinite HP glitch. Valve disabled the hero and later issued a fix. Whether that incident was related to the integrity review, or entirely coincidental, has not been clarified.

What Comes Next

The investigation remains active and open-ended. ESIC's provisional suspensions will remain in place until the commission formally modifies, lifts, or escalates them. A final finding — which could range from full exoneration to multi-year bans — has not been issued, and no timeline has been given.

For PlayTime as an organisation, the remaining roster members are not implicated and were not suspended. Whether the team continues in future competitions will depend on both the investigation's outcome and organisational decisions made in the weeks ahead.

The Dota 2 EWC 2026 Survival Stage continues on July 15 with the remaining matches, now adjusted for PlayTime's elimination.
