Google’s Gemini Agent Plans Work Across Workspace and Microsoft 365, Routes Jobs to Claude, and Stays in Private Preview
Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent on Oct 8, 2026: an enterprise universal agent in private preview that plans work across Workspace and Microsoft 365 and can route jobs to Claude. Price and GA date were not published in launch materials.

Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent on October 8, 2026 at Gemini at Work 2026. The pitch is a single universal enterprise agent that takes objectives rather than step by step instructions, plans the work, connects to business systems, and returns finished output inside documents, inboxes, and developer environments.
According to Google’s short announce and deeper coverage from TechCrunch and 9to5Google, the product is in private preview now. Wider availability is described as coming soon for select Google Workspace Business and Enterprise plans. No general availability date was published.
This is not the free Gemini Flash Lite cut that started rolling out for consumer accounts on October 9. That change is a separate story we covered earlier today. The Gemini agent is an enterprise work product with its own identity model, connectors, and multi model routing that can include Anthropic Claude.
What Google says the Gemini agent does
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, framed the agent as something you give objectives, not just instructions. Google says it plans work, loads skills and tools, connects to customer systems, and brings back finished work where people already work.
Surfaces named across the launch materials include the Gemini Enterprise app, Google Workspace, and third party services. Inside Workspace, users can invoke it with @Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Chat. Google also lists CLI access, iOS and Android, Windows and Mac desktops, Slack, Microsoft 365, and ServiceNow. An API path is described for headless use inside other apps.
One distinctive claim, reported by TechCrunch, is that the agent gets its own Workspace account. That means its own email address, its own context, and an audit trail attributed to the agent rather than to a human coworker. Users can tag it, email it, share with it, or add it to a group chat.
Model routing includes Claude, with user override
Google says the agent runs each job on the model that fits best. Today that includes Gemini and Anthropic Claude families. Support for more private and open models is planned. Users can override the picker.
That matters for shops that already trust Claude for coding or long context work, and for buyers who want a single orchestration layer instead of another chat window. It also blurs the brand line. If the product routes away from Gemini models by design, the name becomes more of a shell than a model lock in. 9to5Google’s coverage quotes Google on that routing story directly.
Cost controls are part of the launch pitch: multi model orchestration, smart routing, and real time spend caps. Those are vendor claims. Google did not publish a standalone price for the Gemini agent in the launch posts we checked. Secondary reports conflict. Treat price as unconfirmed until Google posts a SKU or Workspace plan matrix.
Connectors, tasks inbox, and four memory types
TechCrunch lists connectors spanning Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, and MCP servers inside or outside the company network. Attachments can include files, folders, or project style bundles that combine files and skills.
A tasks inbox is meant to show thinking, subagent delegation, skill loading, code, and progress. Google also describes four memory types in coverage quoting the company: session memory for the current job even when it runs for days, semantic memory as a structured knowledge base, procedural memory for how work gets done including skills the agent writes for itself, and episodic memory for what it has done before.
Those memory labels are useful product language, not independent proof that long running workflows stay reliable under messy permissions or half documented APIs. Treat them as design claims until more customer detail ships.
Early testers versus platform customer lists
Google and TechCrunch name On, Shopify, and PayPal as early testers of the agent. Separately, Gemini Enterprise platform customers cited in the same coverage include firms such as BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, and Orange Spain. Those platform names are not proof that the new agent already delivered those case study metrics. Keep the distinction clear.
Sundar Pichai’s event framing is also platform scale, not agent specific: Gemini above 1 billion monthly active users, and roughly 90 percent of Fortune 100 companies using Gemini Enterprise. Those figures describe distribution today. They do not measure how many seats have the new agent in private preview.
Google’s Gemini at Work 2026 press corner packages the announce alongside partner stories. Read those as Gemini Enterprise ecosystem posts unless a partner explicitly says it is running this new agent in production.

Not the consumer Gemini Agent
Name collision is real. Consumer Gemini has carried agent style features for personal Ultra users since late 2025 in some markets. The October 8 Google Cloud product is an enterprise universal agent with Workspace identity, admin controls, and business connectors. Do not assume consumer Ultra users get this stack today.
If you are comparing Google’s consumer cuts with this enterprise launch, start with our separate post on Google limiting free Gemini users to Flash Lite. That is a consumer plan change. This post is about the Cloud and Workspace agent.
What it means for Indian developers
Indian Workspace and Google Cloud shops should treat this as a preview conversation with your Cloud or Workspace rep, not a toggle that appears overnight. If your org already runs Gemini Enterprise, ask which Business or Enterprise Workspace SKUs are in the private preview pool and whether India tenants are included.
The Claude routing story is practical for teams that already buy Anthropic for coding agents. If Google’s picker can send hard coding jobs to Claude while keeping Workspace context and spend caps in one place, that reduces tool sprawl. It does not remove the need to check data residency, logging, and who owns the agent’s mailbox identity under your security policy.
Spend caps and smart routing matter for Indian SaaS and services firms that share Workspace seats across delivery teams. Set caps before you let an agent with its own email start long running jobs against Jira, Git, or warehouse connectors. Also ask whether MCP servers outside your VPC are allowed by default.
For builders comparing agent stacks, keep two other recent stories in view: Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing and context, and research showing many coding agent setups wiped their own logs when asked in our coding agent logging piece. An agent with its own identity and audit trail sounds good on a slide. You still need to verify what the trail actually stores.
Skeptical read
Google is solving the right enterprise problem: one agent surface, connectors, identity, and cost controls. Private preview is the honest status. Buyers still lack a published price, a GA date, clear India availability detail, and independent proof that long running multi system jobs stay correct when calendars, tickets, and warehouse schemas disagree.
Routing to Claude admits one model family is not enough for every enterprise job. It also raises governance questions: who approved Claude for which data classes, and does the agent’s own email inherit the same DLP rules as a human? Until Google posts a clear SKU and customers separate this agent from older Gemini Enterprise results, treat the launch as a serious preview, not a finished platform claim.
FAQ
Is Google’s Gemini agent available to all Workspace users now?
No. Coverage says it is in private preview, with wider availability soon for select Workspace Business and Enterprise plans. Google has not published a GA date in the launch materials we reviewed.
Does the Gemini agent only use Gemini models?
No. Google says it picks the best model for the job, including Gemini and Anthropic Claude today, with more private and open models planned. Users can override the choice.
How is this different from consumer Gemini Agent features?
The October 8 product is an enterprise Google Cloud and Workspace agent with coworker style identity, connectors, and admin controls. Consumer agent features under the Gemini Ultra umbrella are a different product track, even when the names sound similar.
Did Google publish a price?
Not in the official launch posts we checked. Do not treat secondary guesses as confirmed. Ask your Google Cloud or Workspace rep for preview commercial terms.
Are On, Shopify, and PayPal full production references?
Google and TechCrunch describe them as early testers. Separately named Gemini Enterprise customers should not be read as proof that this new agent already produced those companies’ published platform results.
