Reddit Grew Revenue 53% and Lost 29% of Its Value, Because AI Search Is Eating the Logged-Out Web
Reddit beat Q3 estimates, then fell 29% on weak guidance. AI search is cutting referrals and Reddit will test a login wall to protect its data.

Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million on 29 October, up 53% from a year earlier, and beat analyst estimates. Its shares fell 29.22% the next day to $91.73, the worst one-day drop since the company listed in 2024.
The trigger was guidance. Reddit told investors to expect $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, below the roughly $1.05 billion consensus, and warned that falling search referrals could cut daily active uniques by a low double-digit percentage.
On the same call, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit will test a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter. The stated reasons are better personalisation, better ad targeting and protecting Reddit’s data corpus from scrapers.
Quick answer: Reddit’s advertising business is still growing quickly, but the logged-out search traffic that feeds it is shrinking. AI search summaries are reducing visits from people who never sign in, and Reddit is responding with a login wall that could trade reach for higher-value users. The selloff is the market betting that the trade gets worse before it gets better.
What Reddit actually reported
Revenue rose 53% to $895 million. Advertising brought in $847 million, up 54%, and other revenue, which includes data licensing, rose 35% to $48 million. Net income was $283 million, or $1.40 per diluted share.
Adjusted EBITDA was $402 million at a 45% margin. Reddit also crossed $3 billion in trailing twelve-month revenue. The user numbers were more mixed. Daily active uniques rose 12% to 130.3 million, but US daily actives fell 2% to 50.7 million. International daily actives grew 24% to 79.6 million.
Why AI search is the problem
Reddit built a large audience on logged-out visitors who arrive from Google search. Those visitors are cheap to acquire and expensive to monetise. The company says more than 80% of its monetisation happens inside the app and among logged-in users, which leaves a large slice of traffic producing little ad revenue.
That slice is now shrinking. Huffman said search referrals fell “meaningfully” in the third quarter as Google pushed AI Mode and AI Overviews. In October, Reddit saw search traffic drop by more than 1 million referrals per week on average.
If that pace continues, Reddit said daily active uniques could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from the 130 million base. That is a remarkable admission for a company that just grew revenue 53%.
Huffman argued that AI search does not replace Reddit because it cannot provide community or lived experience. The company also says half of US shoppers come to Reddit to verify AI recommendations, a figure it has not published with a methodology. Treat that as a company claim.
The login wall is a data moat play
Reddit’s plan to test a login requirement is not only about engagement. Huffman said the “vast majority of the scraping and stealing of Reddit happens in our logged-out user base.” Requiring an account gives Reddit more signals for ad targeting and more control over who can read its archive at scale.
That matters because Reddit’s archive is valuable training and retrieval data. The company does not break out licensing revenue, but its “other revenue” line rose 35% to $48 million. CNBC reported that Reddit’s two biggest data-licensing partners are OpenAI and Google. Reddit has not disclosed the terms or renewal dates.
Reddit says it will begin full testing in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter, then use the results to shape a global version. It has not named the markets or a launch date.
The risk is obvious. A login prompt can deter casual readers, reduce the surface that search engines index, and make Reddit less useful as a reference layer for the open web. The company says its app and logged-in users already drive most of the money, but it has not shown that a wall will replace the lost reach quickly enough.
Reddit Max is the AI advertising bet
The other half of the story is Reddit Max, the company’s AI-powered campaign product. Reddit made Max available to all advertisers on 3 September, after an earlier beta. Max automates targeting, creative selection, placements and budget allocation, while leaving advertisers some manual control.
Reddit says early tests found 17% lower cost per action and more than 27% more conversions with Max than with standard campaigns. Those results come from 17 split tests that Reddit ran between June and August 2025, before general availability. They are vendor-run and should be treated as directional.
Adoption is growing. Reddit said Max advertiser adoption more than tripled quarter over quarter in the third quarter. Max is also available through the Reddit Ads API and through Smartly, the first third-party Max partner.

What it means for Indian developers
India is a large source of Reddit’s international traffic and a large market for developers who use public web data. A login wall changes the economics of both. Teams that scrape Reddit threads for RAG pipelines, sentiment models or market research should assume the free, logged-out surface will shrink.
The practical response is to stop treating Reddit as an unlimited free corpus. Use the official API, respect the public content policy and budget for licensing if the data is central to a product. The same shift is visible in the UK competition probe into Meta’s AI content terms.
For Indian advertisers, Max is the more immediate change. Automated campaigns lower the skill floor, but they also concentrate optimisation inside Reddit’s models. Teams should keep a control campaign, track cost per action by cohort and not assume the vendor’s pre-GA numbers transfer to their category.
The broader lesson is cost. If AI search keeps reducing referral traffic, platforms will charge more for the data and attention that remain. That pressure is visible in the rising cost of reliable data and in the security risks of AI intermediaries.
FAQ
Why did Reddit stock fall 29%?
Reddit beat third-quarter estimates but guided fourth-quarter revenue to $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion, below the roughly $1.05 billion consensus. Management also warned that search referral declines could cut daily active uniques by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter. The stock closed at $91.73 on 30 October, a 29.22% drop and its worst day since the 2024 IPO.
Is Reddit really going login-only?
Not yet. Reddit will begin testing a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter. The company has not named the markets, published a timeline or committed to a global rollout. It says the tests will inform an optimised version.
Will a login wall stop AI scraping?
It will raise the cost and reduce casual scraping, but it will not stop determined crawlers or licensed access. Reddit’s bigger lever is its data-licensing business and public content policy. The wall mainly gives Reddit more control over the logged-out surface.
How much does Reddit make from AI data licensing?
Reddit does not disclose a separate licensing figure. Its “other revenue” line, which includes data licensing, was $48 million in the third quarter, up 35% year over year. That is about 5% of total revenue.
