X Rebuilt Its Entire Android App From Scratch — and It Shows

X rebuilt its entire Android app from scratch, delivering faster performance and a new foundation designed to accelerate future feature development for all users.

X rebuilt its entire Android app from scratch — and it shows. The company announced this full architectural rewrite on July 20, 2026. This was not a simple UI refresh. Instead, engineers spent over a year replacing the old codebase completely.

Head of product Nikita Bier called it a massive engineering project. Rewrites are expensive and risky. However, X committed to this change because the old foundation had become unusable. Shipping a broken experience to millions of users is simply not an option.

Why X Rebuilt Its Entire Android App From Scratch

Bier noted that shipping speed is the long-term prize. Legacy code forces engineers to navigate years of technical debt. Therefore, every new feature previously required negotiating with old architecture.

The modernized foundation removes that constraint. Now, teams can iterate faster on tools like Grok integration and premium monetization. Historically, Android lagged behind iOS in responsiveness. This rebuild aims to close that gap permanently.

A Year of Engineering Work

The groundwork began in August 2025 when Bier assembled an Android dream team. By October, the platform saw record downloads. First, the team had to stabilize the surging user base. Then, they focused on core improvements.

The rewrite touched scrolling, loading times, and notifications. The @Engineering account stated the experience now feels better overall. These updates address previous complaints about sluggish timelines and delayed push alerts.

What Users Can Expect Now

The updated app is currently rolling out via the Play Store. Bier’s team highlighted several key improvements for users:

  • Faster overall performance across the app
  • Smoother navigation between tabs and posts
  • Improved reliability for notifications and media

Finally, X confirmed more upgrades are coming. The rewrite was never just about fixing bugs. It created a system capable of moving faster than before. Android users no longer need to wait for features to arrive after iOS.
