30 Million Users Later, NotebookLM Gets a New Name — and a Cloud Computer

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. Now, 30 million users get native code execution via a secure cloud computer for deeper research analysis.

30 million users later, NotebookLM gets a new name — and a cloud computer. Google has officially rebranded the tool as Gemini Notebook. This change signals deeper integration and a major infrastructure upgrade. Therefore, the product now offers real data analysis capabilities within existing research workflows.

From Tailwind to Gemini Notebook

Google originally introduced this tool as Project Tailwind in 2023. The goal was simple: ground AI responses in user-uploaded documents. Consequently, the tool avoided web hallucinations and fake citations. This value proposition resonated sharply with audiences.

The platform now serves over 600,000 organizations alongside individual users. Students use it to turn lecture notes into audio summaries. Meanwhile, business teams build interactive onboarding materials from internal docs. The rename reflects Google’s intent to embed this momentum fully into the Gemini ecosystem.

The branding update is significant, but the infrastructure change matters more. Google is rolling out a secure cloud computer for every notebook. This means Gemini Notebook can now write and execute code natively. Previously, analysis relied solely on model inference without computation.

Now, the tool runs calculations and processes structured data directly. Complex tasks no longer require exporting data to external software. Instead, analysis happens inside the notebook while staying grounded in your sources. This effectively closes the gap between Gemini Notebook and dedicated data environments.

Rollout Availability

Access to these new features follows a tiered approach. First, Google AI Ultra subscribers and eligible Workspace customers have immediate access. Next, all Google AI Pro web users will receive the update within weeks. However, Google has not yet confirmed a timeline for free-tier access.

Expansion Into Search and the Gemini App

The rebrand enables cross-app syncing with the main Gemini app. Your research now travels seamlessly across devices and interfaces. Thus, you avoid re-uploading sources when switching contexts. Additionally, notebooks will soon appear in AI Mode in Google Search.

This integration transforms the product from a standalone environment into a persistent layer. Personal research could soon surface contextually during general searches. For enterprise teams, this makes the tool materially different than it was months ago. Finally, familiar interfaces now hide significantly more compute power under the hood.
